OREANDA-NEWS. October 16, 2012. CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP) and St. James? Settlement (SJS) jointly launched the city?s first Transformer Maze at Discovery Park Shopping Centre (DP) in Tsuen Wan. The Maze was created from around 10,000 disused transformers and power adaptors collected from the public and other channels through CLP, SJS and DP over a four-month period, reported the press-centre of CLP.

CLP partnered with SJS on the „Here WEEE go? programme since 2010. It features CLP Volunteers collecting and donating “Wasted Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE)” to needy families. We also promote recycling concept to over two million residential customers through our bill message.

In 2012, CLP, SJS and DP further enrich this very meaningful programme by raising the awareness of the recycling of transformers and power adaptors. In 2011 alone, some 10,000,000 transformers were discarded in Hong Kongi. That means, on average each resident in Hong Kong discarded about 1.5 transformers. This not only will add extra burden to the already overloaded landfill, the non-degradable heavy metals and other components contained will also pose risk to the environment.

To help raise awareness of this issue, we have prepared communication material to the targeted residential complexes managed by Hong Yip Service Company Ltd and Discovery Park, to customers visited our Customer Service Centres and to all CLP staff. Collection points were also set up to collect transformers and power adaptors for recycling purpose.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Richard Lancaster, Managing Director of CLP Power said, “„Care for the Environment? and „Care for the Community? are deeply ingrained in CLP corporate value. We believe that introducing the recycling and energy efficiency concepts in an interactive and interesting manner through this Transformer Maze will help raising awareness of green recycling and environmental protection to the pubic.”

"It is praiseworthy that CLP has given its full support to this community waste recovery project over the past two years. The collection of transformers is a brand new concept which should be widely promoted amongst the community. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the CLP Volunteer Team which has provided strong contribution to this campaign.” said Mrs Cynthia Luk, Chief Executive Officer, St. James? Settlement.

Today?s opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Richard Lancaster, Managing Director of CLP Power Hong Kong, Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Legislative Councilor (Engineering Functional Constituency), Mr Chan Iu Seng, SBS, JP, Chairman of Tsuen Wan District Council and Mrs Cynthia Luk, Chief Executive Officer, St James? Settlement.

The city?s first Transformer Maze will be opened to the public on 6 October 2012 (3:30 – 7:30pm) and 7 October 2012 (12:00 – 7:30pm). In addition to interesting fact on green recycling and energy efficiency, visitors will also learn about the dismantling process of the disused transformers and how the decomposed parts can come to meaningful use. They can also join a green energy quiz as they tour around the Maze.
