Castle Peak Power Station Coal-fired Generation Restored
OREANDA-NEWS. October 15, 2012. CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP) announced that the restoration of the coal conveyor structure at the Castle Peak A Power Station was completed and coal-fired operations of Castle Peak A was restored, reported the press-centre of CLP.
The intensive repair work was completed in 48 days, less than the original 90 day estimate. With CLP’s robust electricity supply system and well-established business continuity plan in place, a stable and reliable supply of electricity to all customers was maintained during the restoration period despite the hot summer demand.
Immediately after the incident, two task forces were established to thoroughly investigate the incident and to restore the facilities as quickly as possible. The investigation was conducted by external international experts and dedicated CLP personnel. The priorities were to identify the root causes and make recommendations to prevent future occurrence. CLP has submitted this report to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department and the Labour Department.
Shortly following the incident and in accordance with the recommendations suggested in the report, CLP has taken a series of actions which include:
- conduct a comprehensive review and risk assessment of similar structures
- adopt an enhanced structural design for the replacement coal conveyor structure
- strengthen the operating procedures for handling of wet coal
Paul Poon, Chief Operating Officer of CLP Power commended the team’s hard work on the restoration work. “Thanks to the dedication of the teams involved, the restoration was completed ahead of schedule and the power supply to all customers remained uninterrupted during the restoration period.”

We shall continue to work closely with our staff, relevant government departments and all our business partners in enhancing our safety and ensuring a reliable and safe supply of electricity,” Mr Poon continued.

CLP Power Hong Kong Limited operates three power stations in Hong Kong, namely Black Point Power Station, Castle Peak Power Station (comprises Castle Peak A Station and Castle Peak B Station) and Penny’s Bay Power Station, with a total power generation capacity of 6908 megawatts, that are owned by CAPCO, a joint venture between CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (40%) and ExxonMobil Energy Limited (60%).
