OREANDA-NEWS. October 03, 2012. Marking a bold new step in its mission to educate Hong Kong's young people on the importance of protecting the environment, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) has rolled out its groundbreaking Junior Green Engineer Programme. As first of its kind in Hong Kong, the interactive programme brings together engineering, scientific and green education themes under the guidance of electricity experts to nurture a new generation of green pioneers. The programme includes visits to a CLP power station as well as participation in experimental workshops and community service, reported the press-centre of CLP Power.

Each successful graduate will receive a certificate and a personal profile record upon completion of the programme.

CLP's new Electric Green Studio is also hitting the road this month, just in time to recruit Junior Green Engineers from local schools as they begin the new academic year. The newly-refurbished 10-ton electric truck produces zero roadside emission. It follows in the footsteps of the original Green Studio mobile environmental education classroom launched in 2009 with the aim of encouraging children to adopt green measures in their daily lives through interactive activities, including a 3D movie entitled "Earth Hero".

"CLP is committed to promoting environmental protection and caring for the society by cultivating a new green generation," said Ms. Quince Chong, Chief Corporate Development Officer of CLP Power at the launch ceremony. "With the roll-out of our Junior Green Engineer Programme, we are aiming to educate young minds about electricity generation theory and clean fuels.

The mobile environmental education classroom – the Electric Green Studio – is itself a vivid example of practical green energy that also promotes environmental protection to primary school children."

The concurrent environmental sustainability programme is designed to appeal to students from Primary Three to Six. A total of 100 students, along with their parents, will be recruited in the first year of the programme. Participants will examine the subject of electrical engineering under the guidance of 5 CLP electricity experts. They will have an opportunity to visit the "heart" of a power system – the control room, the emission control infrastructure and "ElectriCity" exhibition centre at CLP's Castle Peak Power station.

This will enable them to fully appreciate the challenges involved in creating clean, sustainable electricity and familiarise themselves with clean fuels and the myriad ways people can save energy in their daily lives.

The Junior Green Engineers will also join a specially-designed experimental workshop to learn more about the scientific aspects of electricity generation. They will apply what they have learned by making wind-powered model cars to demonstrate their skill and understanding. The programme also includes local community service, where Junior Green Engineers and their parents will visit some of Hong Kong's eco scenery with new immigrant families to spread the message of environmental protection and show care for the community.

CLP is committed to promoting low-carbon mobility. The Electric Green Studio, an upgraded version of Green Studio, is a visible symbol of that commitment, using the mobile classroom and
enjoyable and interactive ways to educate youngsters on climate change and using energy efficiently.

The new vehicle can now accommodate a larger number of visitors at any one time. Twelve solar panels provide power for air conditioning and some of the lighting systems, providing a tangible demonstration of the benefits of renewable energy. The zero roadside emission design is a practical example for children, providing first-hand experience of the environmental benefits of electric vehicles.

At the kick-off ceremony, 6 students dressed as engineers, scientists and green ambassadors joined other guests at the Baptist (Sha Tin Wai) Lui Ming Choi Primary School to tour a new Electric Green Studio vehicle. Each student was officially named a Junior Green Engineer and encouraged to continue working for a greener Hong Kong.
