Resumption of Construction of Ohma Nuclear Power Plant
OREANDA-NEWS. October 1, 2012. Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “J-POWER") hereby announces today, October 1, the resumption of construction of the Ohma Nuclear Power Plant as detailed below.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, J-POWER suspended construction of the Ohma Nuclear Power Plant then under construction. On September 14, 2012, the government decided on Japan's Innovative Strategy for Energy and the Environment, and then the treatment of nuclear power plants under construction became clear. Therefore J-POWER has decided to resume construction of the plant with the understanding of the local communities.
In accordance with national policy and with the understanding and cooperation of the Aomori Prefecture and the local communities of Ohma-machi, Kazamaura-mura, and Sai-mura, J-POWER has obtained the necessary permits and authorizations and has been proceeding with plans. As a power plant that adopts the most advanced technologies, the Ohma Nuclear Power Plant will be a highly safe and reliable power plant that will play an instrumental role in the stable supply of electricity and the nuclear fuel cycle of Japan.
We are determined to do whatever we can to establish a safe electric power plant through ensuring that we implement reinforced safety measures that take into consideration the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. We also intend to appropriately reflect at all times new standards of technology established by the Nuclear Regulation Authority. J-POWER has not yet set a date for the commencement of operation but intends to review the matter in the future based on progress in construction.
