OREANDA-NEWS.  September 03, 2012. During the meeting with representatives of the Committee on Industry, Research and Development of the European Parliament, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis emphasized that the development of the European Single Digital Market and implementation of the Digital Program will enhance growth across Europe, therefore, both – the Member States and the European Union institutions should more purposefully implement these objectives.

"Availability of qualitative telecommunication services across Europe, improvement of e-skills of residents, increasing use of Internet services in all sectors will contribute to improving Europe's competitiveness, creating new jobs and restoring growth,” said V.Dombrovskis. The Prime Minister noted that even though Latvia is among world leaders in Internet connection speed, Latvia continues to develop infrastructure projects to ensure that high-speed Internet connections are available not only in the largest cities and regional centres, but throughout the country.

Pilar del Castillo, Chair of the Committee on Industry, Research and Development of the European Parliament informed the Prime Minister that the delegation of the Committee has familiarized itself with work of the Office of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications located Riga and welcomed the support provided by the state of Latvia when this EU institution was located in Riga.

P. del Castillo and other members of the delegation - Catherine Trautman and Amelia Andersdotter, shared the same view with V.Dombrovskis that the Single Digital Market development is important to maximize benefits for the Member States from the internal EU market and to enhance economic growth.

Implementation of the Digital Programme, providing each citizen of the European Union with an opportunity to get Internet connection with download speed exceeding 30 Mbit/s, will also contribute to achieving the goals of the Europe 2020 Strategy by improving employment, welfare and value-added produced in Europe. The Members of the European Parliament pointed out to the fact that the BEREC Office in Riga has the potential to play an increasingly important role in Europe's digital future.
