BG Group announced the arrival of the first major pre-fabricated modular components to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Gladstone, Australia, representing a significant milestone for the Queensland Curtis LNG project (QCLNG), reported the press-centre of BG Group.

Six of the modules arrived in Gladstone Harbour for BG Group’s QCLNG project, which will include the world’s first LNG plant designed to be fed by gas from coal seams.

A total of 80 modules varying in size up to about 2 500 tonnes, 75 metres long and 10 storeys high will arrive in Gladstone for QCLNG during the next year as the project progresses towards first LNG in 2014. Once landed, the pre-fabricated modules will be used to construct the LNG plant on Curtis Island.

The steel structures were assembled in Thailand by Bechtel Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Inc., the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the plant. Arrival of the modules is a major milestone less than two years after Bechtel started preparing for construction of the LNG plant.

The total QCLNG workforce has now passed 7 300 workers, with more than 2 000 engaged on the project on Curtis Island where construction of the plant’s two LNG storage tanks and jetties is under way.
