Baltic NPP: Number of Workers Grows
OREANDA-NEWS. August 08, 2012. A meeting of the construction control panel for Baltic NPP Unit 1 and 2 (Neman District, Kaliningrad Region) was held, reported the press-centre of ROSATOM.
The meeting was chaired by Valery Limarenko, Director of NIAEP – the management organization of Atomstroyexport- and attended by representatives of Rosenergoatom (the construction customer), NIAEP (the prime contractor), SPb AEP (the architect general) and contractor-organizations.
Before the meeting the participants walked down the construction site and inspected conditions of facilities under construction. Currently, the work is underway at 20 major and 26 temporary facilities. According to the work schedule, the work is carried out by six earlier engaged and 10 newly engaged contractor-organizations. In July Unit 1 reactor building foundation plate was concreted at elevation -8.850. There nearly 1,000 persons work on the site and over July a number of workers increased by 200 persons.
At the panel meeting, Vyacheslav Makhonin, First Deputy Director and Director of the NIAEP’s Baltic Branch, reported on the construction progress of Units 1 and 2. “To meet the current year plan in terms of the construction and installation work volume, it is necessary to supply the lacking design documentation to the process and increase a number of construction workers on site. Under the plan, in August more than 1,300 people should work at Unit 1 and some 130 people at Unit 2,” he noted.
Before this year end it is planned to build up the staff number up to 2,500 people. The implementation of one of programs within the ROSATOM Production System (RPS) – labor protection management system - continues on the construction site. No occupational injuries were recorded on the Baltic NPP construction site in July. Over the month 4 panel meetings were held on safe execution of works on the site; one “red card” (a directive to punish a worker who breached rules and to recall the construction site access pass) and seven “yellow cards” (notices) were issued. Most frequent violations are fire rule breaches, work without personal protective equipment, and breaches of safety requirements during operation of manual electric tools, the use of faulty tools and gear.
Summing up the construction control panel meeting, Valery Limarenko, Director of NIAEP – the management organization of Atomstroyexport, noted: “Fulfillment of the 2012 plan is a serious task. To this end we have to actively deal with the building up the number of workers and provide work volumes to new contractors.”
