OREANDA-NEWS.  July 25, 2012. CRBC signed an EPC contract with the Kenyan Railway Authority for the civil works of stand-gauged Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, with a contract value of 2.66 billion U.S. dollars and a construction period of five years, reported the press-centre of CRBC.

With a main length of 479 kilometers and a designed speed of 120km/h for passenger transport and 80km/h for freight transport, the monorail using internal combustion system will transport 25 million tons of cargo every year after being built up. The project will be designed and constructed in accordance with China’s railway technology standards.

The project will upgrade Kenya’s existing railway network in an all-round manner, marking the gradual exit of Kenya’s obsolete meter-gage railways that have operated for more than a century at a speed of only 40km/h and with an annual freight volume of only over 1 million tons.
