OREANDA-NEWS. July 09, 2012. Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis held a meeting with Galymzhan Koishybayev, Ambassador of Kazakhstan. The parties were of the same opinion that it is essential to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries, particularly, in the area of logistics and cargo transportation.

The Prime Minister extended gratitude for previous cooperation in strengthening the political dialogue and economic relations and the development of the transit sector.
The Ambassador acknowledged that Latvia is an important cooperation partner of Kazakhstan in many areas, particularly, in transit.

Owing to the opportunities provided by the Latvian ports, it is possible to ensure that the goods of Kazakhstan reach the Western region countries, said the Ambassador, admitting, that the cooperation between both countries has always been close and trade volumes increased also during the crisis period. The sides confirmed their readiness to continue to develop bilateral relations, incl., to extend the cooperation in the area of transport, transit and logistics as well as by continuing to develop contacts between entrepreneurs.

Indicators of trade between Latvia and Kazakhstan:

The turnover of trade in goods in 2011 amounted to LVL 22.7 million. The most significant export services of Latvia to Kazakhstan were cargo transportation by rail and road etc., while Latvia imported from Kazakhstan such services as rail transport and other business services. At the end of 2011, LVL 5.1 million of Kazakhstan’s direct investments were registered in Latvia. The investments were mainly made in the transport and communications sector (LVL 4.2 million), while Latvia’s direct investments in Kazakhstan amounted to LVL 0.3 million. The investments were made in the wholesale and retail sectors.
