Latvia and Kazakhstan Want to Increase Cargo Transportation Volumes
OREANDA-NEWS. June 28, 2012. Both countries also admit that it is necessary to promote and develop container transportation by the Baltika Transit container trains from Kazakhstan, China, Afghanistan and other Central Asian countries through Kazakhstan to Latvia.
Yesterday, the Latvian-Kazakh Intergovernmental Committee on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation and the Kazakh-Latvian Business Council convened in Kazakhstan's capital Astana to discuss important transport matters.
The Latvian transport sector was represented by Transport Ministry Deputy State Secretary Uldis Reimanis, Latvijas Dzelzcels Board Chairman and Latvian Employers' Confederation Vice President Ugis Magonis, and Transport Ministry Transit Policy Department Director Andris Maldups.
It was agreed that Latvian, Kazakh and Chinese transport experts will meet in Kazakhstan's city of Khorgas this September to discuss the further development of the Eurasian Transport Corridor.
Taking into account the advantages of Latvia's transport system, Transport Ministry representatives urged to make use of Latvia's transit roads as an integrated multi-modal transport corridor for transporting Kazakh goods to Europe. The sides also agreed to consider Riga as the center of Latvian-Kazakh transport and logistics.
