Baltic NPP: Excavation of Unit 2 Foundation Pit Started
OREANDA-NEWS. June 22, 2012. On the construction site of Baltic nuclear power plant the principal contractor NIAEP started excavation of the foundation pit for main buildings and structures of Unit 2.
The construction work is carried out by the specialized subcontractor KPD Udomlya-1 under supervision by Rosenergoatom’s branch the Directorate of Baltic NPP under Construction and the principal contractor.
Chief Engineer of the Directorate of Baltic NPP under Construction Alexander Chebotarev explained that the pit would be 14 meters deep and about 890,000 cubic meters of soil are to be moved.
A total of more than 80 heavy-duty machinery items will be engaged, including 20 excavators and more than 60 dump trucks. The work will be carried out round-the-clock. The pit is planned to complete in 3.5 months.
This year, during the pre-construction period it is planned to build the bed drainage, draining pump stations, beds for foundation plates of main buildings of Unit 2.
At present, at Unit 1 of Baltic NPP under construction the work is in the active construction of the nuclear island. Specifically, the lining of the foundation plate is underway at elevation 8.7 m, along with the reinforcement of containment walls and foundation plates of control and auxiliary buildings.
