OREANDA-NEWS. June 22, 2012. Passenger and cargo transportation at the segment of the rail way between Cahul and Giurgiulesti to be suspended due to threat of landslide. During the inspection of the segment Cahul Giurgilesti the embankments landslide was discovered caused by recent heavy showers, a communication by Rail Way of Moldova, a state enterprise, runs.

The land slid at a segment of 10 to 12 m. 1,80 m. far from sleepers to the Prut River. The depth of the landslip is 6 m. According to the Director General of the Rail Way of Moldova it is a very narrow distance between sleepers and the river and there is a risk for sleepers to fall down into the water. In line with regulations of the Rail Way Transport Code, the transpiration at the segment connecting Cahul and Giurgiulesti has been suspended until the defect is amended. According to rough estimates, reparation of the segment will come to about 350 mln. leis.

The Rail Way of Moldova has filed an explanatory note to the government with reasons to create a working commission to study the situation arisen.
