The eWorld 2012 awards recognise excellence in adoption of technology in the processes of governance, thereby showcasing noteworthy innovations. The winners were announced at the eWorld forum held on June 15-16, 2012 in New Delhi.

The distinguished jury said in citation of the award, “Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has made use of cutting-edge ICT to implement an Intelligent Transport System designed by CMC. In the high-quality public transport network, there is a system for real-time communication between buses and the management. Lot of information becomes available to passengers waiting at bus stations. This project ensures safe, fair, reliable and environmentally-friendly public transport system for the citizens of Mysore.”

This project in Mysore is planned to cover 500 buses, 105 bus stops, 6 bus terminals and 45 platforms having the components of Vehicle Tracking System, Central Control Station, Passenger Information Management System, Communication Sub System, Travel Demand Management, Incident and Emergency Management System, Operational and Maintenance Specification and Fleet Management System.

This is a first of its kind ITS in India which is in the roll-out phase and full-fledged operations will commence from August 1, 2012. Through this ITS project, KSRTC intends to address the critical issue of customer service through real time dissemination of information of bus arrivals of a specific route to all its users through large LED displays at bus stops and SMS alerts. It will help KSRTC perform better fleet management, routing and save precious fuel as well. The overall objective is to make public transportation in cities more efficient, comfortable and customer friendly so that citizens are increasingly weaned away from using personal vehicles.

Speaking on the occasion, R Ramanan, MD and CEO, CMC, said, “I am very happy that CMC’s Intelligent Transport System, which innovatively combines an indigenously designed real-time satellite based vehicle tracking system with modern communications, enabling a sustainable public transportation for KSRTC, has been recognized through this award. CMC considers it a project of national importance, which we believe can be replicated to make public transport more commuter-friendly and efficient in all our cities that are undergoing urban renewal.”
