OREANDA-NEWS. June 18, 2012. In late May, JSC Bureyagesstroy comprised by E4 Group was declared as the winner of the auction for the construction of the second phase of the “dry-type” spent nuclear fuel oil storage facility. The contract implies the construction of two separate buildings intended for the storage of spent nuclear fuel from High Power Channel-type Reactors-1000 (carbon-uranium pile, there are 17 reactors constructed in total) and Water-Cooled Power Reactors-1000 (water cooled, 31 reactors). The capacity of the second phase storage facility will be approximately 8 thousand tons. The Project provides for the construction of a solid and liquid radioactive waste recycling workshop, the erection of public utilities, power supply system, access roads – motorways and railways, and installation of security systems. The construction completion date is scheduled for November 10th, 2015.
The spent nuclear fuel oil storage facility will consist of 2 sections – for storage and containerization – of 249.5 x 51.0 m total size. It will be able to accommodate 38000 tons of spent nuclear fuel from High Power Channel-type Reactors and Water-Cooled Power Reactors, which are the main types of reactors currently used in the Russian Nuclear Power Plants.
It is to remind that the first phase of the storage facility was started up in the late 2011, and already in April 2012 the first train from Leningradskaya NPP was unloaded at the site.
In the future, the constructed spent nuclear fuel storage facility will allow solving the accumulated problem on relieving “wet-type” storage yards of NPPs intended for the spent nuclear fuel.
