OREANDA-NEWS. June 9, 2012. PETRONAS is pleased to announce the appointment of Dato’ Samsiah Abu Bakar as its Chief Integrity Officer (CIO) with effect from June 2012.

The appointment of Dato’ Samsiah, who is MACC’s Director of Community Education Division, is on secondment basis and is for a period of two years.

The appointment follows the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that PETRONAS signed on 7 June 2012 with MACC to formalise a collaborative initiative announced in March towards ensuring a corruption-free business environment within the PETRONAS Group.

Dato’ Samsiah, who shall remain an employee of MACC during the two-year period, will be responsible for matters pertaining to PETRONAS’ corruption prevention strategies and initiatives.

Reporting to PETRONAS’ Chief Operating Officer, the CIO will examine and evaluate PETRONAS’ existing practices, systems and procedures, advise on appropriate action plans to mitigate identified risks on PETRONAS’ various activities, and report on the progress and status of integrity initiatives and their effectiveness.

Dato’ Samsiah will also be responsible to train PETRONAS’ staff and relevant stakeholders on integrity and ethical practices by developing appropriate programmes and strategies, supervises the implementation of these programmes and seeks to ensure that all employees and relevant stakeholders are committed and adhere to these practices.

PETRONAS' collaborative initiative with the MACC is in line with its enhanced focus on good corporate governance, transparency and accountability.

As part of this effort, PETRONAS recently rolled out its new PETRONAS Code of Conduct and Business Ethics (CoBE) that replaces the 2006 PETRONAS Code of Conduct and Discipline and the PETRONAS Guidelines for Business Conduct.

The CoBE contains detailed standards for ethical conduct and behaviour expected of every applicable individual or parties, including all employees and directors within the PETRONAS Group world-wide and all contractors, sub-contractors, consultants and other parties who are performing work or services for or on behalf of PETRONAS.

Apart from expressly prohibiting improper solicitation, bribery and other corrupt activities, the CoBE also includes the “no gifts” policy that prohibits the receiving and offering of gifts as part of the efforts to prevent corruption and unethical practice.
