OREANDA-NEWS. June 1, 2012. Recognizing the need to curb wastage of energy, Tata Power, India’s largest integrated private power utility started a unique initiative of energy conservation through school children called ‘Tata Power Club Enerji’€ (previously known as Tata Power Energy Club) in 2007.

In 2011-12, Tata Power Club Enerji reached out to 285 schools nationwide, sensitised over 1.5 million citizens and saved more than 2.8 million units of energy. It received over 25,348 Energy Champions, 26,273 Energy Ambassadors and 1029 self-sustaining Mini Energy Clubs in the year. The units saved by the Club are equivalent to saving 2800 tonnes of CO2 and is enough to light up more than 900 houses for a year!

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power, said, “We are happy and proud to reach this significant milestone in driving the message of energy conservation across the country. The actions and contributions of the Energy Brigade have gone a long way in making a positive impact on the environment. This year, we plan to take the programme to a higher level with focus on not just energy conservation but also on resource conservation and moral & civic values. More than 3.5 million (35 lakh) citizens have been sensitized across the nation and more than 6.2 million units of electricity have been saved till date! The Club is proud to have more than 66,000 Energy Champions and 96,000 Energy Ambassadors who are spreading the mantra of energy conservation among people across various age and income groups. Today, there are 1029 mini Club Enerjis across the country, which are run by school children with the aim to stop wastage of electricity. The energy conservation programme has been taken up as project work in various schools. This year, the movement has taken to the streets with mini clubs organizing and spearheading mass sensitization activities across the nation like rallies, street plays, public addresses during festivals like Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratra etc and also through participation in national conferences on energy conservation.

“Tata Power Club Enerji’, is active in schools in eleven prominent cities of India viz. Mumbai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jamshedpur, Lonavla, Belgaum, Ranchi, Haldia, Bengaluru and Kolkata. It aims at creating creating awareness among school students who in turn sensitize their families and neighbourhood to curtail energy wastage through dynamic and innovative measures.
