OREANDA-NEWS. May 31, 2012.  A leading expert on nuclear safety and Russian nuclear technology VVER Michail Bykov conducted a lecture tour of four Czech Universities between 29th and 31st May.

He gave speeches on the topic ґSafety of Russian nuclear projects and VVER technology after Fukushima.

Mr. Bykov is currently the Deputy Chief Designer in the Russian company OKB Gidropress, which develops and produces equipment for nuclear power plants based on the VVER technology. The firm is one of three members of Consorcium MIR.1200, led by Czech company SKODA JS, which is bidding in the tender to complete NPP Temelin.

The aim of the visit was to strengthen the quality of technical education, which is an indispensable prerequisite for successful development of Czech nuclear engineering, and to intensify scientific cooperation between the Czech Republic and the Russian Federation. Ing. Leos Tomicek, executive vice-president of Rusatom Overseas added: “Cooperation with the Czech Republic in the scientific area is a key priority for Consortium MIR.1200. We believe that this cooperation will contribute positively to the education of Czech researchers and new generation of experts on Russian nuclear technology.”

During his lectures Michail Bykov focused on main technical and design problems that led to the tragic accident in Fukushima. He also explained in detail the advantages of safety systems of VVER technology. He introduced a unique combination of active and passive safety systems, which are set in a way to ensure non-problematic operation of a power plant in case of a complete loss of electrical power and to prevent a radioactive leak as a consequence of airplane crash, tornado, earthquake and other accidents.
