Ukraine Plans Merger of Two Ports
OREANDA-NEWS. May 29, 2012. The Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine is set to combine Reni and Izmail sea ports based in Odessa region.
According to Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure Borys Kolesnikov Ukraine will create a management company in conjunction with Danube Shipping Company. The Minister noted that such measures will increase cargo throughput at these two ports.
Port of Reni is a major transport hub on the Danube. The port is accessible year-round and is linked to the Black Sea by deep-water Danube-Black Sea and Sulinsky channels. Berths depths reach 7.5 meters enabling the ports to accommodate all vessels that can pass through the approach channels.
Port of Izmail is located on the left bank of the Kiliysky estuary between the 92th and 94th km of the Danube. The port specializes in handling iron ore, coal, coke, ferrous and non ferrous metals, ferro-alloys, paper, pulp, fertilizer, and other general cargoes. The port’s berths total length – 2666 meters, depths – 3.5-7 meters. Cranes’ maximum lifting capacity - 40 tons. The port is able to handle 150m-long, 30m-breadth and 7m-draft vessels.
