Russia Needs to Invest Heavily in Rail Facilities Upgrade
OREANDA-NEWS. April 27, 2012. Over the next ten years Russian will have to inject some RUB 5 trillion in upgrading the country’s railway infrastructure, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said at a meeting on the development of railways and high-speed traffic.
"It is estimated that in the next decade to modernize and develop the infrastructure it will be needed to invest about 5 trillion rubles. Among the most important priorities is the improvement of access to Eastern Siberia and the Far East, the development of land access to our major seaports," said Vladimir Putin.
In the near future new routes should be available in the framework of preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the World Cup in 2018. Mr. Putin also noted the projects for expansion of high-speed passenger traffic.
