Accidents at SIBUR Companies Fell by more than Third in 2011
OREANDA-NEWS. April 13, 2012. Safety procedures in place across SIBUR companies have helped reduce accident rates at the group. SIBUR’s occupational safety and industrial protection analysis for 2011 shows the accident rate for employees decreased by 34% in 2011 to 95 incidents, from 127 in 2010. Not counting businesses producing tyres and mineral fertilizers that were sold at the end of 2011 the number of accidents fell 38% from 66 to 41. The overwhelming majority were light injuries sustained in falls. Injuries resulting in death connected with production operations in 2011 were not given.
The injury rate (LTIFR*) was 1.02 and 0.81 without the tyres and mineral fertilizer production businesses, achieving the target for 2011 of lowering the injury rate below 1.1. The number of production-related incidents dropped by 8% and by 3%, not including the tyres and mineral fertilizer operations.
Increased industrial protection at the Group companies was achieved by upgrading production facilities and by combining best organizational practices.
A committee was formed in 2011 to increase the level of industrial protection and corporate standards were introduced for transportation safety. In addition cooperation with contracting organizations in the areas of occupational safety, industrial protection (Labour Protection and Industrial Safety) and ecology, and a company self-evaluation system for LP and IS basic requirements was created. With the involvement of experts from the Russian Technical Supervisory Authority, technical audits were performed at Voronezhsintezkauchuk and Togliattikauchuk. Various special training courses to improve the quality of accident investigations were also conducted. In addition, an automated LP and IS management system was developed with the help of consultants.
High standards were also encouraged through competitions. The latest quarterly winner of the challenge cup for the best company in production safety was Gubinsky GPP. The title of Champion was awarded to 60 workers and the title of Leader in LP and IS to 1,849 employees of SIBUR. Total prizes of about 10 million rubles were awarded. A competition for the best maintained production area, building and equipment was held for the second year running. The winners for 2011 were Noyabrsk GPP, Krasoyarsk Synthetic Rubber Plant, BIAXPLEN K and the representative office Sibur-Trans in Togliatti.
In 2012 the major challenges in occupational safety and industrial protection will remain the reduction of accident and employee injury risk and the implementation of an integrated LP and IS management system.
