CLP Continuously Meets Stringent Air Emissions Caps
OREANDA-NEWS. March 21, 2012. CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP) continued to meet the stringent emissions caps for 2011, which the company primarily attributed to the effectiveness in reducing emissions by the emissions control facilities at its Castle Peak Power Station. (Please refer to table below for detailed emissions figures.), reported the press-centre of CLP.
In 2011, despite the fact that CLP’s emissions performance was constrained by the limited gas available from the diminishing Yacheng gas field, the emissions control facilities at the coal-fired Castle Peak Power Station played an instrumental role in removing emissions that would otherwise have been released, leading to another year of compliance to the stringent emissions caps set by the Government.
Emissions performance of power generation is determined by a host of factors, including electricity demand, fuel mix, fuel quality and availability of emissions control facilities. Change in any of these factors will cause fluctuations in emissions performance.
CLP is committed to further improving its emissions performance to meet the emissions reduction targets set by the HKSAR Government for 2015, which represent an aggressive 45% further reduction from the already low emissions caps of 2010. To achieve this, accessing and securing a timely supply of replacement gas from multiple gas supply sources for sustainable cleaner power generation is of vital importance.
In the meantime, it is critical for CLP to manage gas use prudently before new replacement gas arrives to maintain reliable electricity supply and meet emissions caps. CLP will continue to give its best efforts and work closely with the government, its business partners and the community to support the government’s environmental policy for achieving better air quality.
Since 1990 CLP has been striving towards cleaner power generation by adopting various measures including the introduction of natural gas, ultra low sulphur coal and introducing emissions control facilities. Despite electricity demand having increased by 80% during the past 20 years and emissions caps becoming more stringent, over 80% emissions reduction has been achieved through fuel mix, emissions control facilities and other measures.
