Ust-Luga Container Terminal Started Operating
OREANDA-NEWS. December 29, 2011. “Putting into operation of a new container terminal in the port of Ust-Luga also sets a development agenda for Russian transport industry for many years to come. Ahead of us is the implementation of three development stages which should result in ULCT becoming the largest and the most modern container terminal in Russia and the Baltic Sea region”, noted Alyona Ashurkova, NCC President.
“We are confident that the new service will be successful as the terminal offers a sound alternative to the St. Petersburg city terminals. Its geographical location offers the possibility to reduce the impact of the harsh winter on operation, and it will be able to easily accommodate cargo going to the St. Petersburg, Moscow and Kaluga areas through well established infrastructure. It is the new gateway into Russia and at Unifeeder we are proud to add it as a fixed part of our already extensive terminal network in the area”, says Unifeeder’s CEO Jesper Kristensen.
The new service offers fixed weekly calls to ULCT. Next ship at ULCT is expected on January, 5.The first containers handled at ULCT contain table ware and stoneware tile. Forwarding agent of this cargo is AVELANA LOGISTICS.
ULCT will be developed in three phases. ULCT’s first phase was completed at the end of November, 2011.Its full development will be completed to the 2025 with the approximate capacity of 3M TEU per year. ULCT is the first Russian deep-water and easy-to-access container terminal in the Baltic Sea region. Phase by phase, ULCT will provide the handling capacity essential for supporting the growth of Russian foreign trade and the rise of Russia’s rank in the global economy.
