ROSATOM and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Signed Arrangements
OREANDA-NEWS. December 14, 2011. The signing of the Administrative Arrangements between ROSATOM and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to the Agreement between the Government of the USSR and the Government of Canada on Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy took place on ROSATOM’s premises in Moscow.
On the 13th of December Deputy Director General for International Cooperation of ROSATOM N.N. Spasskiy signed the Administrative Arrangements between ROSATOM and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to the Agreement between the Government of the USSR and the Government of Canada on Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Energy of 20 November 1989.
The signing ceremony was attended by Canada’s Ambassador to Russia J. Sloan and Director General of Techsnabexport A.A. Grigoriev, as well as officials from the MFA of Russia and ROSATOM.
The Administrative Arrangements are shortly to be signed by President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission M. Binder in Ottawa and then automatically come into force.
The signing of the Administrative Arrangements will allow to start practical cooperation in the framework if the 1989 Agreement in accordance with nuclear material management legislation of Russia and Canada. The document defines principles of the use of nuclear material of Canadian origin in Russian installations, as well as requirements for physical protection, control and accounting of such material and related reporting.
The cooperation in the framework of the 1989 Agreement will open an opportunity for Russian enterprises to get additional orders for processing of nuclear materials of Canadian origin for the Russian nuclear power and supplies to third countries. This cooperation will allow merging expertise and engineering capabilities of both our countries in the interests of development of the Russian and Canadian nuclear power complexes while observing requirements of international regimes of nonproliferation and nuclear safety, and on the mutually beneficial basis.
