IOC Experts Assess Russian Railways Infrastructure in Sochi
OREANDA-NEWS. December 08, 2011. Oleg Tony, Vice-President Russian Railways, showed experts from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) the progress on the construction of the combined road and railway line between Adler and the Alpika Service mountain resort, reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.
"The combined road is now more than 68% ready," said Tony. "At the moment, work is continuing on laying 30 kilometres of a continuous second track between Sochi – Adler – Vesyoloe and the construction of a range of structures, including ten bridges, four overpasses and two railway tunnels."
In the mountainous area, work is being carried out along all 48 kilometres of the railway line and 46 kilometres of the road. Construction of the six tunnel complexes is continuing. The third tunnel is the longest and is now 88% complete. An international working group with experts from Amberg Engineering Ltd in Switzerland was set up to provide engineering support for the tunnel work. Drilling at the third tunnel complex is expected to be completed on schedule in August 2012. *** The object consists of two parts: the mountain section, involving the construction of the combined road and railway line to bring Olympic spectators to the alpine events, and the coastal part, where a second continuous railway line is being constructed between Sochi – Adler – Vesyoloe (Olympic Park). The project is part of the Transport Plan for the 2014 Olympic Games. The purpose of the combined transport system is to provide rail and road communications from the centre of Sochi and Adler to the Olympic Park in the Imeretinsky Valley and to the alpine stadiums at Krasnaya Polyana. The railway line will be able to carry 8,500 passengers every hour and the road 11,500 people. On completion, there will be a 48-km electrified railway line, a second 30-km railway line between Sochi – Adler – Imeretinsky resort and a 46-km road.
