OREANDA-NEWS. December 7, 2011. In Moscow, the International conference “Public reporting of nuclear companies: transparency and responsibility” organized by ROSATOM was held.

The conference was attended by representatives of large international companies in the nuclear sector and international organizations (World Association of Nuclear Operators, World Nuclear Association, АREVA, Larsen & Toubro, Westinghouse), as well as representatives of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), stakeholders and expert community.

The Russian nuclear sector was represented by Rosenergoatom Concern, Fuel Company of ROSATOM TVEL, Techsnabexport, NIAEP and Atomenergomash Group of Companies.

Nuclear companies presented on their expertise in reporting to the stakeholders. Sergey Novikov, Director of the Communications Department of ROSATOM, presented on the ROSATOM Public Reporting System. ROSATOM proposed an initiative to draft an international protocol by the companies of nuclear sector and set up a working group for its drafting and identify key participants of a “pilot” program in 2012. It was especially noted that the existing reporting standards should be taken into account when drafting the protocol.

The round-table sessions organized in frames of the conference discussed issues associated with implementation of the initiative: which stakeholders groups’ interests should be taken into account first, a composition of the working group for drafting the protocol, a protocol drafting schedule and other.

The conference participants supported the ROSATOM’s initiative of producing the public reporting protocol for companies of the nuclear sector, stressing that a greater information openness and accountability of nuclear companies before the stakeholders would seriously contribute to improvement of public acceptance of nuclear technology development. Ambassador of the Global Reporting Initiative to Russia Teodorina Lessidrenska, on behalf of the GRI, welcomed the initiative of drafting the sector protocol.
