OREANDA-NEWS. December 2, 2011. Baltic NPP which is being built in Kaliningrad Region will make the Eastern Europe regions energy sound and allow them receiving energy from safe NPPs, Sergey Boyarkin, ROSATOM Programs Director, said at the VI Energy Forum held in Sopot, Poland. The forum was attended by more than 300 leaders of politics and business communities as well as energy experts from over 20 countries of Europe, the USA and Asia.

“We cannot economize on safety and make the project cheaper if this is at the expense of safety systems,” Boyarkin said.

In the framework of the forum the seminar “Future of Nuclear Energy in Europe” was held with participation of representatives of ROSATOM, Westinghouse Electric Company, The Nuclear Atkins Assystem Alliance, Slovenske elektrarne and others.

The ground breaking for Baltic nuclear power plant was on February 25, 2010 in Neman District of Kaliningrad Region. It is built to AES-2006 project and will consist of two power units of 2,300 MW capacity, in total. The first power unit is to start up in 2016 and the second one in 2018. The plant is intended to supply electricity to Kaliningrad Region and for export. For the first time in Russian nuclear power the project is open for private investors, including international ones. They may have an interest of up to 49% in the Baltic NPP project. At the present time, negotiations with potential investors continue.
