NPP Construction Started in Vietnam
OREANDA-NEWS. December 2, 2011. On the 2nd of December, 2011 the Russian specialists started the work on the NPP site in Ninh Thuan Province in the framework of implementation of the Russian-Vietnamese intergovernmental agreement concerning construction of the first nuclear power plant in Vietnam.
On the site 10 drilling rigs have been installed and more than 20 machinery items, portable equipment exclusive, have been brought.
The function that preceded the start of the work was attended by officials of Ninh Thuan Province and Vietnamese utility EVN, which is the customer of the NPP construction.
At the first stage, the Russian specialists will thoroughly survey the site. Then, basing on the findings, the project work will be carried out for construction of the NPP to the Russian VVER (water-water power reactor) reactor technology, which today is one of the safest in the world.
Preparations for the on-site work were done in the shortest period of time: a contract to start the work was signed at a meeting of co-chairmen of the Russian-Vietnamese Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation by I.I. Shuvalov, First Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, and Hoang Trung Hai, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam. The Vietnamese side issued a permit to start the work on December 1, 2011.
The large preparatory work that has been done by the Russian specialists in the course of drafting the contractual documents allowed passing authorization procedures in accordance with the local regulations very fast and receiving a permit to start the work on the future NPP site from the People’s Committee of Ninh Thuan Province.
The started work which allows to commence the full-scope implementation of the project, lays the foundation of the national nuclear power of Vietnam.

The Vietnam’s first nuclear power plant, Ninh Thuan-1, will have two nuclear power units built to the Russian VVER design. The first unit is planned to commission in 2020. Ninh Thuan-2 will be built in the same province by Japanese companies. Vietnam plans to build at least 6 NPPs on different sites.
