OREANDA-NEWS. October 13, 2011. UC RUSAL (SEHK: 486, EuroNext: RUSAL/RUAL), the world’s largest aluminium producer, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) are honoured to invite Dr Jim O’Neill, Chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) – the renowned economist who coined the prominent BRIC concept – to conduct his very first public lecture in Hong Kong at the UC RUSAL President’s Forum on Friday, 14 October 2011. Dr O'Neill will present his views on the changing dynamics of the world and the rapid rise and importance of BRIC countries, as well as the current economic crisis.
2011 will mark the tenth anniversary of the creation of the BRIC acronym. It has become synonymous with the remarkable rise of Brazil, Russia, India and China and their influence on the world economy. Presently, BRIC countries are already dominating the world economy in a number of ways, exceeding the pace of transformation predicted almost a decade ago. It has also been over five years since the concept of the “Next 11” was introduced by GS, a simple description to bracket the eleven most populous countries and to see if they, collectively or individually, might have a BRIC-like impact on the world.
Talking about the rise of the “Growth Markets”, a grouping which includes the four BRIC countries and the four largest N-11 countries – namely, Mexico, South Korea, Indonesia and Turkey, Dr O'Neill will share his views on how their involvement will lead to great global prosperity. Following the lecture, Dr O’Neill will engage in a constructive dialogue with HKUST President Tony F Chan and answer questions from the audience. Prof Chan hopes that the forum will stimulate debate and intellectual enquiry as well as build the human capital that Hong Kong needs to remain competitive in a globalized world.
Oleg Deripaska, CEO of RUSAL, commented: “We are honoured that Dr Jim O’Neill, world’s renowned economist, has been invited to conduct his very first public lecture in Hong Kong at the UC RUSAL President’s Forum. The forum is a unique platform for the world’s most brilliant minds to exchange knowledge and ideas. The BRIC and “Growth Market” are certainly important concepts that have helped to better understand the new pattern of the global economy. Dr O’Neill has always been a pioneer of the global economic evolution, and we believe that his insights will be most inspiring and valuable. Certainly, this lecture attests to UC RUSAL’s commitment to bringing the best to Hong Kong.”
Dr Jim O'Neill is currently the Chairman of GSAM and is responsible for overseeing the global operation of the Asset Management Division. Prior to assuming this role in September 2010, he was head of Global Economics, Commodities and Strategy Research. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1995 as a partner, co-head of Global Economics Research and Chief Currency Economist. Before joining Goldman Sachs, Dr O’Neill worked for Swiss Bank Corporation and the Bank of America.
Being the first Russian company to list in Hong Kong, RUSAL is highly committed to Asia. In its mission to strengthen Sino-Russian scientific and business ties, in June 2010 RUSAL and HKUST established a five-year cooperative agreement. Under the sponsorship of USD 1.5 million, RUSAL would support the development of HKUST’s Institute for Advanced Study, establish scholarships and conduct research project on the application of innovative technologies for using aluminium in construction. The UC RUSAL President’s Forum welcomes world’s renowned speakers to Hong Kong. Politicians, businessmen, scholars and scientists will give a series of the lectures at the forum, sharing their success stories and solutions for global challenges.
