Leakage in NALCO Ash Pond Arrested
OREANDA-NEWS. October 12, 2011. National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has successfully arrested the leakage in its ash pond in Angul. On early hours today, leakage of ash was observed from Ash Pond No.2. Leakage was observed in the outlet of a relief well provided. The seepage of ash water was very minimal which was brought under control in less than two hours. The periphery road provided by the company around the pond for surveillance purpose was slightly damaged due to this leakage and has also been repaired by noon hours.
During monsoon and post monsoon period, due to heavy rainfall subsidence of ash pond dykes are experienced. This incident of is one such occurrence. The alert team of NALCO was able to identify the seepage quickly and took corrective actions immediately on priority. There was no leakage from the ash ponds of the company during monsoon season.
From the above reported seepage, there has been no pollution to the nearby villages or agricultural lands or water bodies and other water sources.
NALCO authorities have assured that the ash ponds under use are in good health and are under constant vigilant supervision of their officials.
