OREANDA-NEWS. October 11, 2011. Tata Power, India’s largest integrated private power company, has crossed 300MW wind power capacity installation in the country. Tata Power’s wind farms are spread across four states namely Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the leading states in promoting wind power generation in India. An additional 64.5MW capacity is under execution and will be commissioned by FYQ3 2011-12 in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Further, the company is in the process of acquiring 20.95MW operating wind assets in Maharashtra from Niskalp Energy. The company will also shortly place an order for 150MW wind capacity to be set up in Maharashtra and Rajasthan and to be commissioned during the course of FY2011-12 and FY2012-13.

The collective generation by the wind farms was 349MUs during the FY2010-11 as against 320MUs in FY2009-10.Tata Power endeavours to substantially enhance its green energy generation through various renewable opportunities including a substantial presence in wind power.

Anil Sardana, managing director, Tata Power, said, “The company is enhancing its renewable energy portfolio as targeted and today around 21 per cent of the power generated is from ‘clean’ sources. Today our wind portfolio has crossed 300MW and the company is committed to adding a sizable capacity every year to maintain a significant wind portfolio.”

Adding further, Banmali Agrawala, executive director, strategy and business development, Tata Power, said, “We want to ensure that 25 per cent of our power capacity comes from clean technologies. This may go down in the near term, but we aim to have at least one-fourth of our power through such sources.”

While the wind power generated in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka is sold under a long-term power purchase agreement with the state DISCOMs ie, BESCOM in Karnataka, TANGEDCO in Tamil Nadu, and GUVNL in Gujarat, the wind power generated in Maharashtra is sold to Tata Power’s distribution business unit in Mumbai.
