OREANDA-NEWS. September 28, 2011. UT will open new liberal arts academic building. The complex, situated in Tartu old town, will also include von Bock house and buildings in Lossi 3 and Ulikooli 17 (Babel), reported the press-centre of University of Tartu.

Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy Valter Lang said that the completion of Jakobi 2 brings to a close a years-long development process.

"Linguists, philosophers, semioticians and archaeologists have never enjoyed such good working conditions," he said, adding that many other units in the faculty will be improving their conditions in the near future as they move into spaces vacated by those who move into the renovated building.

The building posed some challenges and "surprises", according to the university's head of procurement and development, Heiki Pagel, and the amount of archaeological work proved greater than expected: nearly a thousand archeological finds surfaced from under Jakobi street - mainly skeletons.

"One great thing is also that together with Tartu city UT has fixed up the pavement and parking area in front of the Jakobi 2 building. With that, another part of Tartu inner city looks nice and fresh," Pagel added.

The construction and interior finishing cost 4.3 million euros. AS Oma Ehitaja stood for the renovation of the building.

The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, 23rd at 1 pm in front of Jakobi 2. After that, everyone's most welcome to take a guided tour in the new building.
