OREANDA-NEWS. September 19, 2011. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will provide technical assistance to Moldova in 2011-2013 within the project "Development of Moldova's seed sector in the context of climate change and reduction of disasters' risk".

The FAO representative for Moldova, Diana Gherman, has told MOLDPRES that a part of the grant would be used to purchase equipment for the Institute of the Survey of Crops and for the laboratory of the State Committee for testing plant types.

The proceeds will be also used for breeding and promoting new varieties of plants, so that the agricultural producers have access to quality seeds and to improved varieties of crops, which adapt better to the ongoing climate changes. At the same time, the project will contribute to the creation of a solid breeding and processing basis of the seeds' industry, in order to turn the field into a profitable activity, Gherman added.

The project's budget stands at 475,000 dollars.
