OREANDA-NEWS. August 29, 2011. The second round of consultations on the draft National Development Strategy "Moldova 2020" was held, with participants approaching the issue of safely supplied and efficiently used energy.

The Economics Ministry presented a comprehensive report on the situation in energy sector.

According to the ministry's public relations and protocol service, the working group identified the main issues and difficulties in the energy sector of Moldova: increasing dependency on the import of energy resources (with the country importing 97 per cent of the energy it needs), low level of energy efficiency and of using renewable energy sources, shortage of capacities needed to generate adequate electric energy, high debts by the thermal-energy sector towards the natural gas provider, poor interconnection with the neighbouring countries in the gas and electric energy sectors etc.

The working group's members noted that the problems in the energy system are mainly generated by the historical development of the branch, peculiarities of the transit period to the market economy and the current economic situation.
