OREANDA-NEWS. August 22, 2011. Plastic bags made from renewable raw material will be distributed to the volunteers participating in the event in Brasilia on August 21

Braskem’s green plastic will be present in all garbage bags distributed in the Brasilia edition of Limpa Brasil Let’s do it!, a project that aims to unite thousands of volunteers to participate in clean-up actions in seven major Brazilian cities. Braskem, the largest thermoplastic resin producer in the Americas and global leader in biopolymers, is one of the sponsors of the event, which will take place in Brasilia on August 21st.

Braskem, in partnership with Embalixo, will provide the plastic bags for the collective drive to clean the city. The bags are made from green plastic, a polyethylene made from sugarcane, whose main advantage lies in its production process, which captures up to 2.5 tons of CO2 per ton of plastic produced.

Brasilia will have 30 collection points, defined in conjunction with the Federal District’s Urban Cleaning Services, where volunteers will dispose of the waste collected during the initiative.

The population of Brasilia can sign up through the website www.limpabrasil.com, and volunteers will pick up their kit with a pair of gloves and bags made from green plastic at the Banco do Brasil branches. A total of 40,000 bags and 20,000 pairs of gloves will be distributed.

For each garbage bag dropped off at the Ecoponto, volunteers will receive one ticket for a concert with renowned Brazilian musicians, which will take place at 5:00 p.m. at Gramado Central - Esplanada dos Ministerios. The following bands and artists have already confirmed their participating in the concert: Tihuana, In Natura, Dhi Ribeiro, Ellen Oleria, Renata Jambeiro and Ed Motta.

"As the global leader in biopolymers, Braskem is determined to contribute to sustainable development through innovative solutions. To make further progress in terms of sustainability, however, it is vital to involve the population, and green plastic can help with that. Supporting this initiative is therefore totally in line with our objectives," said Jorge Soto, Braskem's Sustainable Development Officer.

Braskem is the leading thermoplastic resin producer in the Americas. With 31 industrial plants in Brazil and the United States, Braskem produces annually over 15 million tons of thermoplastic resins and other petrochemical products.
