OREANDA-NEWS. August 19, 2011. China First Metallurgical Construction Corporation (CFMCC) started paving the light weight steel fiber concrete over the largest span viaduct on Wuhan Road on August 3, 2011. It is the first time this new material is used in large span viaducts, reported the press-centre of MCC.

This large span viaduct is located on Jinqiao Road, at the northern section of Wuhan Road, and crosses diagonally over the box culvert of Huangxiao River. It is a continuous large span viaduct with a total span of 350m, wherein the largest span is 150m and the other two spans are 100m each, and the largest section is 6m. This makes it the viaduct with the longest span, the longest total span length and the highest variable section in local cities.

To ensure the paving quality of this large span bridge, CFMCC and the research team of Wuhan University of Technology carried out joint R&D on the utilization of light weight steel fiber concrete in large span viaduct, ensuring strength and reducing the load of large span bridge. The resulting bridge was lighter than the total weight of the common steel fiber concrete by 20%.

Introduced by the experts from Wuhan Municipal Project Quality Supervision Station, this is the first time this kind of new material is used in the domestic large span viaduct. Its successful application would solve problems of the large span steel box girder bridge such as large elastic modulus of bituminous concrete and steel plate, poor interface shear strength, and paved layers that damage easily.
