OREANDA-NEWS. August 18, 2011. Shenhua Group’s core installation, the Demonstrative Coal-to-olefin Project in Baotou was put into commissioning. At 12 o’clock, it produced ethylene and propylene and got through the processes, which symbolized the successful primary commissioning of the project. Hua Jianmin, Vice Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, Zhang Guobao, Vice Director of The NDRC and Director of the Energy Bureau, Wang Xianzheng, President of China National Coal Association, Zhao Shuanglian, Vice Chairman of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Zhang Xiwu, Chairman of Shenhua Group, Zhang Yuzhuo, President & CEO, Wang Xiaolin, Vice President came to the site to express their congratulations, reported the press-centre of Shenhua Group.

The Project is the first one that takes coal as raw material to produce polyolefin. With the success of the commissioning of the Project, it creates new methods for coal-based energy and chemical industry and lays China’s leading place in the industry of global coal-based olefin industrialization. Moreover, it plays an important role in China’s of petrochemical materials substitution and guaranteeing the safety of the national energy.

On December 11, 2006, The NDRC officially approved Shenhua’s Coal-to-olefin project in Baotou. Coal-to-olefin process with independent intellectual property rights and catalyst were applied to the core technology. It could produce synthesis gas through coal gasification; purify the synthesis gas to make methanol; then, converse the methanol into olefin, and finally make polyolefin through the olefin polymerization process. The Project consists of six systems, including 46 sets of devices and units. The six systems include a coal-based methanol joint chemical plant with an annual production of 1.80 tons (including 5 sets of devices of air separation, coal gasification, purification, sulfur recovery and methanol), a methanol-based polyolefin joint petrochemical plant (including 4 sets of devices to make olefin with methanol, separate olefins, polyethylene and polypropylene), a supporting thermal power plants, a utility installation, an ancillary production facility and off-site project.

The Group regards ensuring the national energy safety as its own responsibility. Therefore, it actively develops coal-based energy and chemical industries, develops recycling economy and extends the industrial chain to promote industrial upgrading and restructuring, to motivate economic growth with high-tech, high value-added and high-quality and to achieve the socioeconomic development with many environmental benefits, high ecological civilization and high employment.

And the construction of Coal-to-olefins plants in Baotou symbolizes this development concept. Meanwhile, speeding up the transformation of economic development modes and carrying out specific actions to implement Scientific Outlook on Development are the Group’s strategic choices to take a new road to industrialization. They are also important ways to achieve the strategic goals of “Pursue scientific development, rebuild Shenhua and double the economic aggregate within five years”. Shenhua Group will take this successful commissioning as an opportunity to carry on the stable operation of plants, to stick to the new road to industrialization, to vigorously promote the progress of industrialization of coal chemical industry, and to make new contributions to the sustainable development of demonstrative Coal-to-olefin industry and coal chemical industry.
