OREANDA-NEWS. August 10, 2011. Baosteel special steel unit and Shanghai Electric Co., Ltd. sign sea water desalination and cold-rolled titanium material strategic cooperation framework agreement. The two sides will work together on desalination and coastal nuclear power material research and development, achieve import substitution and boost China's strategic emerging industry development. Baosteel vice general manager, special steel unit general manager Pang Yuanlin, Shanghai Electric chief operating officer Zhu Bin attend the signing ceremony, reported the press-centre of Baosteel.

After years of scientific and technological research, China has made a major breakthrough in desalination key technologies and has basically met the conditions for industrial development. However, part of the key components in the desalination plant depend on imported products.At the same time, nuclear power plant equipment in coastal areas requires seawater as coolant and cold-rolled titanium with strong corrosion resistance depends on imports.

As a leader in China's large equipment manufacturing industry, in the past two years, Shanghai Electric form part of the intellectual property rights in desalination plant and coastal area nuclear power plant equipment development and manufacturing. As the company's long-term strategic partner, Baosteel pays continuous attention to their developments, and relying on the special steel unit's new alloy strip production line, carries out related material research and manufacturing.

The signed strategic cooperation framework agreement clearly states that the two sides will set up a joint material research and development team composed of key technical personnel on both sides, invest in research and development with clear target, and do joint research and development of duplex stainless steel and cold rolled titanium strip material in coastal nuclear power plant and desalination equipment.

Pang Yuanlin said that Baosteel had a long history of cooperation with Shanghai Electric and they had common understanding of cooperation. "As for Shanghai Electric's entering  the high-end manufacturing industry, Baosteel will stick to the customer oriented principle, do our best in the material research and development, provide the best cost-effective products so as to fully support Shanghai Electric's sustainable development, seek  long-term development pattern for both sides and achieve win-win situation."
