V. Putin Held Meeting with Rosatom State Corporation Head
OREANDA-NEWS. June 29, 2011. The results of the work in the industry for half the year and also plans for the future were discussed at the meeting. Taking into account the tragedy at Fukushima NPP in Japan a special attention in the course of the conversation was paid to the questions of Russian nuclear power plants operation. As Sergey Kiriyenko reported to the Russian Federation Prime Minister, the experts, among them foreign ones, who had inspected the NPPs in Russia, confirmed that all Russian nuclear power plants completely complied with the existing Russian and international standards in the field of safety.
In particular, Sergey Kiriyenko noted at the meeting that after the Fukushima tragedy over 100 inspections had been held at Russian NPPs.
The accident at Fukushima has shown that the main point in such cases is reliability of auxiliary equipment for electric power and water supply; that is why the inspections of all the emergency response systems and diesel-generators were conducted. “We have 112 diesel-generators at the plants inspected completely, and all the 100% were checked for response. All of them responded to a full extent. And 520 emergency pumps for water supply – the 100% inspection proved their reliability as well. Secondly, we performed a complex inspection of the operating organization at all the plants. In fact, each of the plants underwent four inspections. After that Rostekhnadzor performs its inspections and analyses – we gave them the data for analysis”, Head of Rosatom reported.
According to him, Rosatom State Corporation has become the only company in the world, which after the events at Fukushima invited the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) for a peer review. “A group of 9 people came to us headed by Chief Technical Director of French EDF (Electricite de France). There were Americans and IAEA experts. They inspected 8 plants of our 10 ones, checked the system of safety and reliability and made the estimation that they considered all the taken measures to be sufficient and strictly complying with not only Russian, but also international standards”, Sergey Kiriyenko underlined.
He noted, that the new projects of nuclear plants, which were being constructed, also “met all the post-Fukushima requirements”. “We have made a computed model, which proved that if our plant was located in the district of Fukushima, it would easily resist both the 9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami wave. By the way, this is the only plant in the world, which is able to resist a heavy plant’s crash”, Sergey Kiriyenko summed it up.
Apart from the questions of Russian NPPs’ safety, the questions of Rosatom State Corporation interrelation with foreign partners were discussed at the meeting.
