Lenovo ThinkPad Laptops to Support Cisco EnergyWise Tool
OREANDA-NEWS. June 29, 2011. Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced that select Lenovo ThinkPad laptops will be the first PCs to support Cisco EnergyWise, an energy management service embedded within the millions of Cisco Catalyst switches that are deployed in enterprises around the world. The collaboration between Lenovo and Cisco helps enable customers to monitor, control and report on the energy use of Lenovo smart PCs as well as other IT devices connected to Cisco networks.
Customers with a Cisco network and Lenovo ThinkPad laptops can use the management and monitoring services from Cisco EnergyWise to establish more customizable and accurate energy management policies to help save money during times of peak energy costs, as well as when PCs and other IT equipment are not in use. ThinkPad laptops with this new capability include models of the ThinkPad Edge, L, R, T, X, W and SL Series laptops.
“We’re amplifying the power management tools and green design that are engrained in the ThinkPad laptop’s DNA,” said Dilip Bhatia, vice president and general manager, ThinkPad Business Unit, Lenovo. “Since PCs are such a keystone within a business’ IT infrastructure, embedding Cisco EnergyWise on our ThinkPad laptops makes it easier for large customers to gain an accurate, holistic view of their organization’s IT energy consumption so they can optimize their assets and reduce costs.”
Control Range of Office Devices
Using Cisco EnergyWise on ThinkPad laptops, IT administrators can place a ThinkPad laptop into sleep, battery mode or shutdown mode together with devices such as phones, printers and other IT endpoints connected to the Cisco network. Via Cisco EnergyWise, ThinkPad laptops report the exact power use at a moment in time versus estimates or just “on” and “off” states.1 Updates regarding the current wattage used by individual PCs enables more accurate reporting and helps administrators take proper action to minimize consumption in areas without full power needs.
“Lenovo pre-integrating Cisco EnergyWise in their ThinkPad laptops enables our customers to expand the value of their Cisco network without installing any additional software,” said Jeff Reed, vice president of Cisco’s Unified Access Business Unit. “Now our catalyst switching customers have a highly accurate PC energy management solution that delivers impressive energy savings at no extra cost to our customers.”
Significant Cost Savings
Customers who take advantage of Cisco EnergyWise on ThinkPad laptops can gain significant energy cost savings for their organizations. For example, an IT manager supporting an office can use EnergyWise to shift unused phones to “sleep” mode, laptops to battery mode and other wireless access points to low-power mode during peak-demand electricity pricing and realize up to 35 percent savings on their energy bill.2
Cisco EnergyWise complements existing ThinkPad laptop energy management tools such as ThinkVantage Power Manager and Remote Power Manager that allow users and IT administrators to control power consumption modes on PCs to help conserve energy and maximize battery life. These tools help provide necessary data to the EnergyWise tool that in turn makes energy management more accurate and effective across all devices.
