OREANDA-NEWS. June 20, 2011. Toyota Tsusho Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Toyota Tsusho"; Headquarters: Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture; President: Junzo Shimizu) established CJ Toyota Tsusho Philippines Inc., (hereinafter referred to as "CJTPI), which is a company engaged in the business of manufacturing and selling xylose, a natural functional sweetener extracted from coconut husks, through a joint venture with CJ Cheil Jedang Corp., (hereinafter referred to as "CJ"), the largest general food processing company in Korea. (This news was released to the press on February 25, 2010.)

The CJTPI started full scale operations in June 2011. In preparation of the launch a dedication ceremony of the new manufacturing plant was held on May 19, 2011, with participation by guests of honor, such as Vice President Binay, the Governor of Mindanao State, the Korean Ambassador to the Philippines, including the Japanese Minister to the Philippines.

Xylose is a functional natural sweetener that is low in calories. Other than its use as a raw material for xylitol, which is used in chewing gums and oral care products, it is also used as a food additive and demand, particularly in the Asian region, is expected to increase in the future.
Furthermore, since the raw material of xylose is from coconut husks, it is an environmentally friendly raw material with a "low amount of waste water" and"reusable as activated charcoal once the xylose ingredients are extracted", unlike birch bark or the corn cobs, which were traditionally used as the raw materials. CJTPI will manufacture xylose using a world-first manufacturing process.

Toyota Tsusho is aiming for sales of JPY3 billion from the xylose business over the next three years, through the full scale operations of CJTPI. Furthermore, functions and know-how nurtured over the years will be used to build a global value chain to stabilize procurement.
