Recently good news came from the "Technical Review Meeting of Baosteel's New Type Hi-B steel for Converter Transformers in HVDC Transmission Project" hosted by China Machinery Industry Federation: the new type Hi-B steel B27R085 developed by Baosteel independently passed the specialists' review, reported the press-centre of Baosteel.

The specialists are of the consensus that the comprehensive technical indicators such as electromagnetic property, mechanical properties, coating performance and shape tolerance of this product conform to the international technical standard requirements for like products, reach the international leading level among the like products, and can replace the imported products for application in the large transformers including the converter transformers for HVDC Transmission Project.

After over 10 years' research with great concentration and nearly 3 years' production practice, now Baosteel is able to supply in batches stably more than 20 grades of 3 series, i.e. GO, Hi-B and laser scribed Hi-B steel. Last year, Baosteel's products were successfully applied in many 500 KV and above voltage grade large transformers and the converter transformers in Three Gorges underground power station DC transmission project, breaking China's long-term reliance on import for high grade grain-oriented silicon steel for large transformers.

Converter transformer is the important electrical equipment in DC transmission project, and is the high end product with the highest technological content and the most difficulty for manufacture in transformer manufacture industry. It has very high requirements for the electromagnetic property of iron core material - grain-oriented silicon steel. For a long time, the material always depends on import. In view of the requirements of localized production of higher grade grain-oriented silicon steel for converter transformers in national key power project, Baosteel's silicon steel production, sales and research team keeps exerting itself to overcome many technical difficulties, and realized batch production in the beginning of the year.

In the next stage, Baosteel will further improve and enhance the capability of silicon steel manufacture system, drive the localized production of grain-oriented silicon steel for large transformers in national key power project, and boost the safe operation of national power system.
