OREANDA-NEWS. June 10, 2011. The flow of passengers at Vilnius International Airport is gathering pace. This May the largest airport in Lithuania serviced 175,500 passengers, which is 31 per cent more than in May 2010, reported the press-centre of Vilnius Airport.

The number of passengers transported on regular flights substantially grew by 41 per cent, while charter flights received 5 per cent fewer passengers this May compared to the last year.

“This is the second best result of May in the history of Vilnius airport – only in 2008 we serviced several per cent more passengers than this May,” says Tomas Vaisvila, General Manager of Vilnius International Airport. According to him, such result allows feeling optimistic before the busiest travel months – July and August – and expecting even stronger traffic growth.

This May the record high number of passengers travelled from Vilnius airport to as many as five destinations, including Frankfurt, Riga, London, Kiev and Rome. Riga remains the most popular route from Vilnius – over 20,000 passengers were carried to this destination. More than 15,000 passengers flew to London and Frankfurt, over 10,000 to Copenhagen.

Swedish airline Skyways adds flights from Vilnius airport to Berlin and Stockholm from 7 June, and Wizz Air opens a new route from Vilnius to Dortmund from 27 July.

This summer Vilnius airport will service 600 flights per week and is expected to transport 1.8 million passengers by the end of the year.
