Baosteel Achieved Remarkable Results in Pollutants Emission Reduction
OREANDA-NEWS. June 09, 2011. With World Environment Day approaching, good news comes from Baosteel. According to latest data: during the Eleventh Five-Year period, through technical innovation, management optimization, increased research and technical inputs and integrated management of energy and environmental protection, total emission reduction of major pollutants has achieved remarkable results, reported the press-centre of Baosteel .
Among them, compared with the period beginning, at the end of the period, sulfur dioxide emission falls by 63%, COD (chemical oxygen demand) emissions decreases by 85%. Faced with 11th five year period energy saving&emission reduction task, Baosteel further promotes the integrated management of energy and environmental protection. With total pollutant control as target, Baosteel prepares environmental protection planning, plans specific emission reduction projects and measures, and puts emission reduction projects into the enterprise investment reform program.
During Eleventh Five-Year period, Baosteel has invested 1.668 billion yuan onenvironmental protection projects, developed environmental indicators such as the total discharge of major pollutants, emissios per ton of steel and the comprehensive utilization of solid waste, and distributes the targets at different levels, and implement them in detail. Baosteel improves the environmental responsibility system, clarifies environmental responsibility, regulatory, technical, service support and evaluation system to ensure the effective operation of environmental management system.
Baosteel continuously promotes environmental improvement system, focusing on the implementation of key environmental projects, continues to improve emission reduction levels of various pollutants: the emission of sulfur dioxide, waste water, COD and other major pollutants and solid waste comprehensive utilization achieve a breakthrough. Sulfur dioxide emission is Baosteel Co.,Ltd's key monitoring indicator during 11th five year period. As early as 2005, Baosteel built additional desulphurization facilities in Power Plant Unit 2 and became the first few enterprises in Shanghai to build desulphurization facilities . Subsequently, the power plant 1, 3 and FGD projects were completed and commissioned. Meanwhile, Baosteel overcame difficulties that there was no sintering desulfurization precedent in China.
Relying on independent innovation and technology, Baosteel built flue gas desulfurization project in the iron mill No. 3 sintering machine and successfully copied it to the No. 2 sintering machine and No. 1 sintering machine in stainless steel unit. Desulphurization facilities have been built and are under stable operation, which makes a positive contribution to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions. In 2005, total sulfur dioxide emission in Baosteel was 492.31 million tons and in 2010, 181.88 million tons, which is reduced by as much as 63%. During Eleventh Five-Year period, Baosteel completes the reduction task before time and is repeatedly affirmed by the Shanghai Municipal Government. During the Eleventh Five-Year period, Baosteel Co.,Ltd. has also been active in promoting the dust, waste water treatment and solid waste utilization.
Steel making area dust collector transformation and expansion, BOF dust collector second transformation, transformation of power plant units dust collector, change from ESP to dust bag in sintering machine tail bag are effectively implemented which effectively reduces the dust emissions by half in 2010 compared with 2005. Baosteel Co.,Ltd fully uses technology advantage of directly linked factories in wastewater reuse and water conservation, and implements water-saving transformation and wastewater reuse project focusing on the stainless steel unit, special steel unit and Meishan Steel, whose wastewater emissions decreased by 66%, 82%, 88% last year compared with 2005.
Among them, the breakthrough in coking wastewater treatment technology makes a positive contribution in reducing wastewater COD and ammonia emission. In addition, to develop recycling economy and clean production, roller slag processing technology research is developed, which promotes strict management of reduction and classification from the source, strengthens solid waste utilization and industrialization process and enables enterprises to further improve the level of solid waste comprehensive utilization.
