OREANDA-NEWS. June 02, 2011. The scientists of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University (NR TPU) have developed a project of a nuclear cluster creation on the territory of their region

Professor of the Physical and Technical Institute NR TPU Igor Shamanin reported this news on Friday, during the 14th Innovation Forum in Tomsk.

 According to him, all conditions were created for creation of a nuclear cluster in Tomsk region – Sibirsk Chemical Combine (SCC, a branch of Rosatom State Corporation TVEL Fuel Company), research nuclear reactor, a system of nuclear industry staff training had been created on the basis of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) and NRNU MEPhI affiliated company (Seversk).

 Also Seversk NPP with two power units and federal highly technological centre of medical radiology are to be constructed in the region in the next years. Besides, Mining and Chemical Combine – the enterprise on the production of weapon-grade plutonium – works in Krasnoyarsk Territory neighboring Tomsk region.

 Having Seversk NPP and the reactor of Brest type, which can be constructed in Tomsk, it is possible to speak of the realization of a completely closed cycle on the territory of Siberia. Availability of all that allows creation of Tomsk nuclear cluster as a site of Rosatom’s innovational development in Siberia”, Shamanin said.

 According to him, the placement of a nuclear cluster in Tomsk region will allow transferring of nuclear technologies into electric power industry (through NPPs), nuclear medicine, and the industry presented in Siberia.

 “Also engineering and equipment building for Rosatom could be placed here. Now Siberia has come closer to its potential markets – China, India and South-West Asia”, the professor noted.
