Toshiba Group to Revise Summer Vacation
OREANDA-NEWS. June 02, 2011. Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today announced that it will propose revisions to the summer vacation schedules at its Tokyo headquarters and Toshiba Group business premises in the area served by Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO), as a further means to reduce Toshiba Group’s electricity consumption. This measure is in addition to Toshiba Group’s current efforts to cut power consumption, including shifting part of production to nighttime, and will support Toshiba’s efforts to reduce power consumption beyond the government’s 15% reduction target.
Toshiba has submitted the revised vacation schedule to its labor union as a prelude to the start of discussions.
Outline of revised summer vacation schedule
Subject to final agreement, Toshiba’s headquarters and branch offices in the TEPCO service area will reorganize their calendar to introduce extended vacation periods in the high summer months of July, August and September. This move will realize extended vacations totaling three weeks in all. Manufacturing sites in TEPCO’s service area, while making adjustments to match the characteristics of their industry sector, will do the same to secure a total of two weeks of extended vacations during July and August.
Final plans will be completed by mid June following negotiation and agreement with the labor union in each business premises, in line with the following way of thinking.
In order to even out power demand across the seasons, the calendar revisions will shift some holidays within summer to the extended vacations, and also shift holidays from other periods of the year into summer.
Secure longer holidays that allow large equipment to be fully turned off (not on standby) for extended periods.
In order to even out Toshiba’s overall power consumption on mid-summer weekdays, manufacturing sites will take rolling holidays, with different sites taking holidays on different dates.
