OREANDA-NEWS. May 17, 2011. Gold Fields Limited (Gold Fields) (JSE, NYSE, NASDAQ Dubai: GFI) has announced the appointment of Dr David Grant as General Director of Gold Fields KR LLC and General Manager of Talas Copper Gold LLC, reported the press-centre of IBC.

Gold Fields KR is a subsidiary company of Gold Fields Ltd, one of the world’s largest producers of gold. Gold Fields’ extensive and diverse global growth pipeline includes the Talas Copper Gold joint venture in the Kyrgyz Republic. Talas Copper Gold LLC is a mining exploration joint venture between Gold Fields and Orsu Metals Corporation, with Gold Fields as managing partner. Exploration is focused on the Talas region in four license areas: Taldybulak, Barkol, Kentash, and Korgontash.

Dr Grant has worked in the Kyrgyz Republic for more than 10 years in a wide range of development projects funded by the World Bank, European Union, EBRD and by the UK, German and Swiss governments. His previous project management experience covered work in Europe, Central Asia, East and SE Asia.

Dr Grant commented: “Right now the Talas project is in the exploration phase, with funding from the parent companies. However, if the initial indications from the Taldybulak deposit are proven, the project will be very beneficial for local communities, the Kyrgyz government and our shareholders. It will also demonstrate development of the country by realising the potential of its own resources.”

Dr Grant stressed the commitment of Gold Fields to transparency and the highest environmental standards. “I understand the concerns communities have about the impact of mining on the environment and farming. My background is in agriculture and we know that the project will only succeed in the long-term if we enforce strict environmental standards, mine safely and ensure that the surrounding communities benefit economically. I am certain that we can find ways to partner with the community and government to make this project succeed,” he said.

The former General Director of Gold Fields KR LLC - Julian Woodcock – has been promoted to Exploration Manager for the Gold Fields St. Ives project in Western Australia; a mine currently producing around 13 tons of gold annually.
