OREANDA-NEWS. May 06, 2011. Throughout three month of this year Klaipeda Port handled 9,08 million tons of sea born cargo, the overall cargo handling increase reached even 20,8 % if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year, reported the press-centre of Klaipeda Port.

According to cargo handling turnover in Easter Coast Baltic Ports in January – March of 2011 KlaipedaPort handled the largest cargo volumes and left behind the neighbouring Riga and VentspilsPorts and slightly left behind the Joint Port of Tallinn. The common cargo handling results of KlaipedaPort and Butinge Terminal made 11,08 million tons in January – March of 2011 and exceeded the handling turnover of the Joint Port of Tallinn by 1,87 million litas.
 
The highest increase in cargo turnover during three month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2010 was reached due to increased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (+726,5 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+262,1 thousand tons), oil products (+185,8 thousand tons),containerized cargo(+162,3 thousand tons) and liquid natural and chemical fertilizers (+140,0 thousand tons).
 
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo were the handling turnover was 3 580,9 thousand tons (39,5 percent of overall port handling) increased mostly (25,5 percent).The handling of general cargo increased by 23,2 percent, in total 2 788,8thousand tons (30,7 percent) were handled. Liquefied cargo handling increased by 13,1percent, volumes of this cargogroup were2 705,8thousand tons (29,8 percent).

In January–March of this year 1 622 ships. i.e. more by 11,4 percent or by 166 ships, comparing to the corresponding period of the previous year,called KlaipedaPort.The number of passengerswas 54,9 thousand, i.e. more by 26,3 percent comparing with the corresponding period of 2010.

Klaipeda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling in the region of the Baltic countries. 90 970 TEU, i.e. more by 42,3 percent comparing to the correspondingperiodof 2010 ( the increase made27 053 TEU) were handled in Klaipeda Port in January – March of 2011.
