Tulachermet Obtained Expert Opinion on Emission Reduction
OREANDA-NEWS. April 8, 2011. Tulachermet has obtained an expert opinion on the verification of Emission Reduction Units as part of a project entitled “Measures to Boost Energy Efficiency By Modernizing Cast Iron Production”. The document was issued by specialists from “Bureau Veritas Certification”, an independent inspection organization.
The opinion states that Tulachermet's plan meets the requirements of the UN's Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is applicable to projects carried out in accordance with article 6 of the Kyoto Protocol, as well as the requirements of RF legislation, and can be recommended for approval by the RF Ministry of Economic Development for purposes of joint implementation in accordance with article 6 of the Kyoto Protocol and Resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation NO. 843 of 28 October 2009.
Thanks to comprehensive measures taken during the modernization of blast furnace No. 3 in 2003, Tulachermet has successfully reduced its coke rate. As a result, the amount of greenhouse gas emmissions (carbon monoxide equivalent) has fallen by an average of 137.174 tonnes per year. The factory can sell the reduced emissions for the period from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2012, which total 685,872 tonnes. Moreover, Tulachermet must conduct monitoring throughout this period to confirm that emissions volumes have dropped.
Money from emissions sales will go towards further renovation of the main production unit. The company's next step is to submit an application to approve its joint implementation plan to Sberbank of Russia, which serves as the operator of carbon units, for participation in a competitive selection process.
