Global Environment Fund Plans to Allocate USD27 mn for Ukraine
OREANDA-NEWS. March 28, 2011. Over the next three years, the Global Environment Fund plans to allocate USD 27 million on activities of biodiversity, climate change and combating land degradation. This was discussed in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine during the meeting of the Head of the Global Environment Fund Monique Barbie with representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources who are who are the national coordinators of international environmental conventions, representatives of other ministries and agencies whose work is relevant to the environment, as well as environmental organization in Ukraine.
In addition, the Global Environment Facility will be selected from USD 3 to 10 million to protect international waters and the elimination of chemical pollutants. At the same time Barbie Monique reported that during the previous 20 years of the Fund for environmental protection measures of Ukraine has been allocated USD 71 million.
Monique Barbie has recognized that in previous years, too much money spent on the development of environmental documents and the work of environmental experts. "I think, before the development of legislative projects in the field of ecology was really needed. But now our main priority - the practical result of the implementation of projects ", - stressed the Head of the Global Environment Fund and added “The efforts of the fund shall be maintained to work inside the country, as national coordinators now get more power from us, and thus - more responsibility”.
During the meeting Monique Barbie has briefed the audience of 20-year old history of the GEF and described the organization structure and operating principles.
