OREANDA-NEWS. March 16, 2011. The new website www.chernobyltwentyfive.org which provides comprehensive information about the international efforts to transform Chernobyl into an environmentally safe site has been launched, reported the press-centre of EBRD.

The website provides an overview of the activities in Chernobyl since the 1986 accident and an outlook on works that remain to be done. It demonstrates the work of the Government of Ukraine and the international donor community in the 25 years since the accident.

A video animation (© Novarka) shows the design and future construction of the New Safe Confinement which will be constructed next to the damaged unit 4 and eventually be slid over the reactor.

A photo gallery (© EBRD) ranges from the immediate aftermath of the accident to the present day and illustrates the achievements to-date, but also the size of the remaining tasks.

The video animation and all photos are free for download for media and may be reproduced in publications under the condition that copyright for the video animation and all derived footage must be credited to Novarka, whereas credits for photos must credit the EBRD.

The site also includes updates on latest news and upcoming events and is being refreshed on a permanent basis. April 2011 will see a number of events in Ukraine to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the accident. The website will provide latest information.

The EBRD is the manager of the Chernobyl Shelter Fund, which was established in 1997 by the G7 to help Ukraine to transform the present Chernobyl shelter into a safe and stable system under the Shelter Implementation Plan.

The EBRD also manages the Nuclear Safety Acccount through which the finalisation of the Spent Fuel Storage Facility is funded. The facility is essential for the decommissioning of the spent fuel assemblies from the operation of the Chernobyl units 1-3.
